Water Activities

Sea Scouts differ from Land or Air Scouts because as well as covering the required program, they major in water activities. The types of water activities differ for each section, but all cover: safety, both in the water and in crafts, and experience in at least one form of water craft.

Scouts earn badges based on water safety and also learn how to sail most of the Group’s boats. Part of the Group program includes sailing on weekends during the sailing season.

By the time a Scout becomes a Venturer, they will already have a strong basic knowledge about water safety, sailing and possibly minor rescues. Once a Scout turns fourteen they have the opportunity to take the Vic Roads test in order to receive their Powerboat Operator License. Once a Venturer, Rover or Leader has successfully completed a VicScouts/YA Recreational Power Operators Course, they are qualified to perform rescues and support other water craft from the motorized safety boat.
When competent, Venturers have the opportunity to skipper our fastest and most technically difficult boat, ‘The Cat’ (‘PTO Windrush’), the Group’s two-man catamaran, as well as any other boats the Group owns.
